This is a list of chapters that were serialized in Osomatsu-kun, from its original run from 1962-1969 to its later revivals.

Character debuts and other noteworthy details are also marked down.

The more recent digital edition by eBookJapan (34 volumes) may have differences in the amount of chapters collected compared to the 2004 Takeshobo print edition (22 volumes), as well as other previous printings; Akebono Publishing's "Osomatsu-kun Complete Works" (31), Kodansha KC Comics' 1980s reprints (34), and so on.

Weekly Shonen Sunday[]

(週刊少年サンデー)

Publisher: Shogakukan

Original run: April 15, 1962 (#16) to August 13, 1967 (#33).

Reprint status: Nearly complete (Some extra features and crossovers missing; see "Other Stories" for more information). Chapters may also be represented out of order or renamed inconsistently across reprints, with incorrect afterword dates listed.

After Akatsuka introduced "The Genius Bakabon" in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, the -kun feature in this magazine eventually switched to a monthly (yet soon infrequently published) feature running from September 10, 1967 (#37) to April 6, 1969 (#15). A final "Ataro + Osomatsu-kun" crossover capped off the run on May 18th (#21).

It is important to note that some frontispieces and pages were originally in full-color in their magazine release, but had their colors removed for tankobon reprints usually via assistants tracing the lineart (the color manuscripts are either lost or have been withheld from further reprinting). There are also cases where spreads or frontispieces for a story will go missing either due to the factor of a lost manuscript, or also owing to how they were initially reprinted to start with (eg: "We are Grand Prix Racers" is missing a color spread and its original ending, and "Captain Mom" is missing its original title page).

There are also cases where panels may be re-arranged severely for the tankobon reprint, as the space at the bottom of some pages may have originally been occupied by advertisements, a Q&A corner with Akatsuka, or other magazine extras. In short, it is near-impossible to find an edition of Osomatsu-kun that has its chapters as close to the original as printed.

Starting most significantly with Takeshobo's bunko edition but sometimes earlier on as well, the titles and dialogue of stories began to be modified to remove any language deemed to be discriminatory, or in some cases to modify dated pop-cultural references (such as the celebrity Matsuyo likes in "Get that Esper Kitty!"). These practices have been met with debate by readers, as it is seen as inauthentic to the original work even if it is to try to make it seem more respectful for the modern day.

Unlike the case of The Genius Bakabon, where an instance of cannibalism was censored and redrawn, there are no notable artwork edits made to -kun, even in cases with depictions of other races that may be discriminatory.

There are many instances where chapters were untitled in -kun's original magazine release, and may have many different options depending on the publisher and edition. To avoid confusion, the most recent titles of chapters are given, followed by any notes on any different titles in original printings or other releases.

This was another magazine by Shogakukan that published manga on a quarterly basis, switching to a monthly schedule from January 1965 and on. However, its releases of -kun would stall during the Boys' Life features and then nearly cease, save for its two final sporadic chapters.

As with the Weekly Shonen Sunday serialization, some stories contained a color frontispiece or a fully colored story that were not retained for reprints.

Monthly Shogakukan Book[]

(小学館ブック)

Reprint status: Only the below two original chapters made it into the eBookJapan release and some previous editions (Akebono, Kodansha KC Comics), while the stories from September 1966 to March 1967 appear to be reprints of previous Weekly Shonen Sunday material due to the lack of time for Akatsuka and Fujio Pro to craft new stories.

  1. "An Autographed Picture, Merci Merci" (メルシメルシのにがお絵ざんす, July 1966): Iyami poses as a skilled artist who can draw portraits of others. Reprinted in Akebono volume 17/Kodansha volume /eBook 17, as well as appearing in "Cute Osomatsu-kun" volume 2.

Grade School Magazines[]

At least four of Shogakukan's grade school magazines are confirmed to have serialized this title on a monthly basis. These stories, along with those of other series, would sometimes also have an extra -kun feature in an "appendix"-type booklet.

Seven chapters from the 4th and 2nd Grade runs appear in the "Osomatsu-kun Complete Works" collection by Akebono and the 1980s reprints by Kodansha, but are omitted from later collected editions, including the eBook release. The Kindergarten and 1st Grade stories were mostly produced in color, and have simpler vocabulary and spelling for younger children.

The Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade runs were finally included in "Hiragana Osomatsu-kun", excluding any chapters considered to fall under "Fun Quiz Manga" along with such supplementary booklets from 2nd Grade authored by Kunio Nagatani and/or Mitsutoshi Furuya. The reprinted chapters were unearthed via a combination of scanned magazine issues from libraries and the raw manuscripts that had been saved at Fujio Pro.

Kindergarten[]

Original run: April 1966 to March 1967

Reprint Status: Included in "Hiragana Osomatsu-kun", except for the January to March 1967 chapters due to being considered quiz manga and not "pure manga works"

2nd Grade[]

(小学二年生)

Original run: April to December 1966

Reprint Status: Incomplete and excluded from most releases. Only two identified chapters appear in the Akebono and Kodansha editions, and each are included in a volume of Akita Shoten's "Cute Osomatsu-kun" anthologies (May 1966 in vol.1, July 1966 in vol.2). The main run does appear in "Hiragana Osomatsu-kun", minus the "Fun Quiz Manga" booklets.

These comics are monochromatic, save for the colored frontispieces, and are 10 pages long like the standard Osomatsu-kun stories. While the vocabulary is simpler, the cast usage is a bit extended and the other sextuplets do appear.

  1. "The Sakura is Important" (さくらはたいせつに , April 1966): Iyami cuts the branches off a cherry blossom tree to sell, only for Totoko to get angered when she sees the sextuplets with the branches and for Iyami's plan to backfire when he falls from the tree.

In the end, Osomatsu helps find a rich lady's ring and the sextuplets are able to buy Chibita and the little girl a nice cake to celebrate Christmas with. The characters can be seen to have much more super-deformed proportions, marking the shift in art style that will eventually start occurring in 1967 Shonen Sunday stories.

Comic BomBom (The Latest Version of Osomatsu-kun)[]

(コミックボンボン)

Publisher: Kodansha

Reprint status: Complete (eBook Japan edition; March 1989 chapter omitted from "The Latest Version of Osomatsu-kun" Kodansha tankobon, and chapters from August 1989-March 1990 uncollected. The run is entirely excluded from the Takeshobo bunko edition)

This series ran parallel to both Nakayoshi's Akko-chan's Got a Secret! revival and the Bakabon revivals in Kodansha magazines including both BomBom and TV Magazine. This results in in-jokes and characters from both series being carried across, as what had been done before in previous runs with the Akatsuka Star System.

The character of Abu-Nyan was supposedly pitched to be included in the Pierrot anime, but was rejected and only wound up appearing three times within the BomBom stories likely due to its lack of popularity.
